News Roundup

Here’s a sampling from headlines that caught my eye this week.

Too Old For Foster Care, and Facing The Recession, via The New York Times.

If we were to get affected severely by the recession, we at least have the resources, support and know-how under our belts to do what we need to do. These young adults already have the odds stacked against them, and hardly any support system. Their lives are already not fair. That breaks my heart.

DNA Test Outperforms PAP Smear, and Benefits of Mammogram Under Debate In Britain, also via The New York Times.

I feel very conflicted about these two findings. One, I want women to have access to the health care that they need. Two, the idea that we as women are being sold a bill of goods regarding our health care is infuriating. Don’t even get me started on insurers covering Viagra and not birth control. As a high-risk candidate for breast cancer, I’ll still be flattening my boobs according to the American standard, thankyouverymuch.

A Coffin, A Flag, A Photograph, via The New York Times. This whole lifting of the ban on photographs of fallen soldiers…. Well, all I’ll say is, “It’s about fucking time.”

I’m also really bothered by the rash of recent mass murders and horrible incidents over the last month. Ten people were killed in a shooting spree in Alabama; four police officers were killed by a man in Oakland as the result of a routine traffic stop; three police officers were slain in Pittsburgh by a man who lured them to their deaths; eight people were shot to death at a North Carolina nursing home; thirteen people were gunned down at an immigration center in New York before the gunman killed himeslf; a father in Washington shot his five children to death and then himself after discovering his wife was having an affair and leaving him; a man killed four people and then himself in Alabama; and the body of a missing eight-year-old girl was found shoved in a suitcase and floating in an irrigation pond this week in Tracy, California.
