Mary Judah

So people have been asking me how Judah came to be Mary Judah. To be honest, I can’t remember, except to say that it was her choice and that the switch happened about a year ago when she was starting her preschool.

We’ve always called her Judah and one day she decided that she wanted to be called by her full name. All of her preschool friends and most of our friends here call her Mary Judah. Joshua is probably the person who has the most trouble remembering to call her by her full name.

What’s so funny, is that in the way when Joshua introduces himself as Joshua and people say in return, “It’s nice to meet you, Josh,” (which always leaves me completely baffled! and a little annoyed - take notes), when I tell people her name is Mary Judah, many inevitable just call her Mary. If she goes by any one name, it’s Judah.

There was a brief period - like three days - this spring, sometime in late April, when she decided to go by Judah again, and then she promptly changed her mind. The only person she calls herself Judah to is her brother, who can’t form the word Mary.

He can, however, form the word “shit.” I’m not sure if this is intentional or not. I’ll let you be the judges.

OMG - I cannot tell you how many times I get a “Nice to meet you, Tiff” after I introduce myself. So not cool.

Oh, that’s awful. That’s like people calling me Kristy. Does not happen. Except for that one pastor at my college church who always called me Kristy, no matter how many people, myself included, corrected him.

I think I was in high school before I realized that some of my dad’s co-workers called him “Bob.” His name is Robert. My dad - a “Bob?” Yeah, I don’t think so.

    meh.

i’d prefer that people shorten my name any day. my family’s nicname for me??? Lulu.

  5. yah, i get beth from people who have only known me as bethany and it’s annoying.

i still refer to her as judah or judah-loo.

so, are you guys coming to dallas in october? will she be offended if i call her judah?

OK, I make it a point to never call Joshua “Josh”, but there MUST be a cap on name rules within one family! If I switch to Mary Judah (and I’m not promising anything, I personally feel that there may be a statute of limitations on this sort of thing), I *will not* be switching back! So there.

Let the record show that Joshua was, at one time, Josh.

Those of us who used this moniker for the better part of 2 years should be allowed to be grandfathered in on the use of Joshua and given a dispensation of grace.

Cynthia, not Cindy! I totally agree. My friends can call me Cyn (and do) but when I meet you and say my name is Cynthia, don’t go changing; it won’t please me.
Having said that, I refuse to call anyone that I grew up with a made up name that he has adopted as a grownup. I do try to take the “y” endings off, but I stop there.

brent, i think you have carte blanche on calling joshua whatever you want.

but does he really strike anyone as a Josh? really?

what’s funny to me is that josh has told me sometimes he would prefer to go by joshua. but for the sake of attempting to keep things straight in the family, he goes by josh. i still call him josh, but when we meet someone new he’ll introduce himself by his full first name.
