City Car Share

I’ve been chastised for not blogging often enough.

So today we went to orientation for City Car Share. You should check out their web site. Basically, you pay a refundable deposit and a monthly fee, and then you rent your car for $4 per hour and 44 cents a mile. They have “pods” all over the city where their cars are located. All the participants are given a fob which opens the car and keeps track of your mileage, etc. You go online or call in and make a reservation for what car you want at what pod and for how long you want it, and then when it’s time for your reservation, you just go get it. Insurance and gas are part of the deal.

It seems pretty cool. We signed up over the weekend and got oriented and our fobs today. Off-peak hours are $2 per hour and they have a few cars that rent for $6 an hour, like a convertible Mini Cooper.

We’ll see how it works. There’s a pod about 4 blocks away from the house.

That sounds like one of the coolest ideas ever. I wonder how it compares to taxicab fees and all that…44 cents a mile can add up pretty quickly, I’d think.
