Crowns

I saw Crowns at the Dallas Theater Center last night with people from work. It was a musical about a young African-American woman who moves from Brooklyn to South Carolina after her brother is shot and killed to live with her grandmother. Her grandmother takes her to church and makes her wear a hat. Each woman in the play tells and sings her stories about wearing hats and what they mean and meant to them and to other women they know. It’s about how eacn women is a queen through wearing her hats.

Lots of insight, really good gospel music, and a great story. This is probably one of the best plays I have seen. If you’ve got about $20 and some time this weekend, go see it before the show’s run ends on Sunday. Here’s a great review.
