Jon Stewart - Crossfire Update

One of my favorite video clips surfing its way around the internet is of Jon Stewart giving it to the guys on Crossfire. Apparently, a lot of people didn’t think he was funny. I thought he was so serious, he made America realize how ridiculously funny Crossfire really is.

It looks like CNN may shut down the show now (at least according to the NY Times), and my vote for credit and pat on the back goes to Mr. Stewart. A quote from the article:

…the fact that Mr. Stewart, a comedian, is perhaps the most influential political commentator on television is in itself a sign of the times…

I know this was a long time ago and maybe a dead issue by now but I just wanted to say to…well to whoever I guess… I just wanted to express that I totally agreed with Jon, about Crossfire being partisan hackery and that it is the equivalent of pro-wrestling. I am also a big fan of the Daily Show and agree with his views on most things, but, lets be really really honest here…I mean, I understand, as jon was saying, his show is a comedy show and so he doesn’t necessarily have a duty to the people to asked the hard-hitting questions, and this was his defense against when Tucker had them bring up examples of the questions Jon asked Kerry when he was on the program, that was his defense. So I said, “ok, I understand, I’ll give him that.” That’s alright, I agree with him, his duty is not as much a question as it is for a show like crossfire, but, among the jokes on the show, between the laughter there is always a message, always a consistent point of view. One can sit and accuse crossfire of being talking heads for the right ,and hell, they are probably right on, but if you wanna tell me that Jon is an independent voice, that the message that comes out of his show every night isn’t serving someones agenda, isn’t pushing a point of view, then thats unreasonable I think, and since we agree with him, because we identify, I think its harder for us to see it. We have to start learning to be intellectually honest with ourselves and others. I like Jon, I agree with him, but you can’t deny that he’s taken a side, just as we all have, and he plays as if he doesn’t push for his side, that he is just an observer. As long as he pushes a message on a large audience, then he is just the other side of the coin. I think if you are going to mock the “game”, then it is better to not be a player in it.
