Joshua and I were eating breakfast at Starbucks in Waco this morning, where my good friend Tracey works, after saying our goodbyes to Taylor (who is on his way to Namibia right now) when Taylor’s youth pastor came up and introduced himself to us. He said Tracey told him we were planting a church, so we clarified and told him a little bit about what we ARE doing. He then mentioned a Brian MacLaren book to us, which we haven’t heard of, and said that leader types, such as Chris Seay at University Baptist were into this book, and by the way had we heard of Chris and his church?
I said yes, and that we considered Chris Seay to be pretty traditional. Then the youth pastor said, “Oh, you really ARE out there.”
In the immortal words of Morpheus…”yesss…”
The whole conversation just further cemented my reasons to NOT read “Purpose-Driven Life,” the latest Christian book fad. I think it’s this year’s “Prayer of Jabez.” If it’s the latest book all the Christian leaders are reading, then I don’t want to be reading it.
